Algebra- that branch of mathematics dealing with properties of numbers and quantities by means of letters and other general symbols.
[al-jabr al the, jabr reunion of broken parts (Arabian)]

The activities cover most aspects of school-level algebra from Year 7 to Year 11 (age 11-16), concentrating on correct use of the language and consistent with the UK Numeracy Strategy. Real world applications are not covered. Some essential rules of algebra are described on the Rules page.
This is a first draft of "Interactive Algebra" and is incomplete in a number of areas. Download and printout this complete guide to Interactive Algebra (Word document, 67Kb)

oneLearn the skills and practise them. Each page is interactive in some way and is in order of increasing difficulty. There may be a button to press to change details in the question and another button to reveal the answer step by step. Some times a slider is available so you have more control over the numbers used. You may also be able to choose to use negative numbers for substitution. Read through a few examples then have a go yourself. Have paper and pencil handy.
There are interactive assessments on major topic areas and on algebra in general. These are designed for printing out.

two
Learn the language - move your pointer over the expressions and a simple definition will appear

Activities

buster
Practise solving linear equations dynamically.

Build your own function machine
You can build a function machine with two operations, control the inputs and the numbers within the machines. You can also hide the inputs or outputs, so the machine can be used with a group of students to figure out inputs or outputs.

Balancing
Practise the step by step approach to solving equations

Ordering
Practise putting statements in logical order

Investigate algebra charts
Create dynamic flow charts and and convert them to graphs

Investigate sequences
Find rules for terms of sequences that are described in pictures, including nth terms.
