A spokesman for Ofsted insisted later: "Chris did know the answer, but chose not to give it. He has never claimed to be a maths expert - his background is English.

¹Possibly a reference to Stephen Byars, trade and industry secretary, thinking in 1998 that seven eights were 54, or perhaps David Blunket, Education Secretary, who, earlier this year, took 14 seconds to work out 12 times 9.
