MATHS self assessment tests a CD-ROM resource for AS/A2 exam preparation |
Installation of the CD is straightforward and you can find your way immediately to the main menu which allows you to enter the exam room or check your results. A "Preferences" option allows you to select from a choice of background music, or to have "voice and effects". This may seem a bizarre option on an A-Level resource, but if you try the background music option "Exam conditions" you can have the eerie background sound of footsteps pacing about a room, an irritating cough and the occasional "Shhhh!". This may be the best part of the whole CD! The main resource in the exam room is divided into revision and exam mode. Each of these contains a large body of multiple choice questions. In the revision mode, the correct answer is accompanied by some explanatory notes; in the exam mode all you get is the answer. Topics are organised according to the 8 sections mentioned above. There is no reference to AS or A2 modules. That's it. A large collection of multiple choice questions. None of the answers is in any sense guessable from the question given, and for this reason I cannot see the point of of the exercise. If every question requires the use of paper and pencil to work through the problem to a solution, then surely the capable student who is on the ball will arrive at the correct answer and click on it for confirmation, while the rest (the majority?) will stumble through some writing and either get stuck or produce some other answer that is probably not one of the provided incorrect options. What then is the point of having a multiple choice set-up like this? Whilst it is mildly amusing to hear the various ways you are told you've clicked on the wrong answer, I'd give this CD-ROM a miss. |
