C2 Topic 3: Sequences and series
The binomial expansion of (a + b)n for a positive integer n backmore
These are all examples of binomial expansions:
binomial expansion
Find the binomial expansion for any integer n.
Enter a value for n:
Summary
Note that the coefficients in the expansion are the numbers in the rows of Pascal's Triangle. Make sure you fully understand how this formula works:
binomial expansion
Algebraic errors are often made in examinations due to incorrect use of this formula. Negative signs get lost and expressions like (ax)² become ax². When working out the coefficients of the terms, use the standard formula for this. Pascal's triangle is not recommended.
