Specifications, course outlines and speciman exam papers for AS/A2 Mathematics are published in the UK by AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and NICCEA, and can be downloaded from their web sites. Unfortunately, these specifications do not all define the AS and A2 units in the same way.

These online resources will follow loosely the format of primarily the Edexcel and secondly the OCR specifications. Where these differ - and they do significantly in places - , or where there are exceptions for the other specifications, an indication is made. In some areas, AQA is very different to both Edexcel and OCR.

graph centre

The Graph Centre gives immediate access to all the main graphs referenced in the Pure Maths modules P1 to P6.

exam question
exam question 2001
exam question 2002
exam question 2003

Each module contains a number of interactive examination style questions. They are based on mock or specimen papers from the exam boards or real examination questions from recently set papers. In some cases the year the question was set is indicated (by the "01", "02" or "03").
Each question consists of a context, within which various parameters can be changed, and a step by step detailed solution. Each question can therefore form the basis of an active revision program. Note that these questions do not include many substantially long ones. Find out at your school or college where you can get past examinations questions from.

In addition, some modules include an "Examination paper". This is a collection of 7 or 8 examination style questions that cover a broad selection of topics from the module.

Some of the answers provided include a basic mark scheme which will refer to A, B and M marks. Method marks (M) are awarded for ‘knowing a method and attempting to apply it’. Accuracy marks (A) can only be awarded if the relevant method marks (M) have been earned. (B) marks are independent of method marks.

extended problem

There are a few extended problems in some of the Pure modules, usually based on aspects of graphs. These are intended to be slightly harder than any similar problems set in official examinations. They may be used as the basis of some extended personal study or for a self-study task set by a school or college. Those in modules P1, P2 or P3 could be used as a way of deciding whether or not to take up the Further Mathematics course (modules P4, P5, P6).

Some of the examination papers allow use of a graphic calculator. This page describes some of the useful functions available to help with graph sketching, calculus and statistics.
If you do not own a graphic calculator, you could buy one online.

Sources
The main sources were the course specifications from the various exam boards themselves. The java applets used also provided inspiration for ideas too. See Technical for more on those.
