Summary
It is important to understand the difference between variable and constant. A, B, C and D are constants, whereas x is a variable. It is true that at the start you do not know the values of any of them, but A, B, C and D will have fixed values that you can work out. x does not have a fixed value, so you cannot find it! The identity sign º means that the left hand side (LHS) and right hand side (RHS) of the identity are equal for all values of x.
