Simplifying surds backmore
A surd is a number written in a form that includes a square root. For example Ö3, 1+Ö2 and 7Ö5 are all examples of surds. A surd is a useful way of giving a value in a precise, or exact, form where there is no need to be concerned with accuracy or decimal places.
In the displays below, when you click the = sign, one step of the process will be revealed. Study it and the comments in the status bar at the bottom, then click the next = sign to reveal the complete process gradually step by step.

Summary
When simplifying surds, look for factors that are square numbers themselves.
