What exactly is a box and whisker plot (otherwise known as boxplot)? It is a display of the minimum, maximum, lower quartile (LQ), upper quartile (UQ) and median of a set of data. The diagram below illustrates this for a set of 7 numbers. The width of the box shown in pink is the "inter-quartile range".

Summary Often questions will define "outliers" for you and these are displayed on the box plot as separate points outside the span of the "whiskers". This page uses HotEqn.
