What exactly is a box and whisker plot (otherwise known as boxplot)? It is a display of the minimum, maximum, lower quartile (LQ), upper quartile (UQ) and median of a set of data. The diagram below illustrates this for a set of 7 numbers. The width of the box shown in pink is the "inter-quartile range".

Summary
Often questions will define "outliers" for you and these are displayed on the box plot as separate points outside the span of the "whiskers".
