S2 Topic 3: Continuous distributions
The rectangular distribution backmore
First, adjust the positions of the points labelled a, b and P so that the total probability is 1. You will then have a continuous uniform (or rectangular) distribution.
Move points x1 and x2 within this region and the probability of P(x1<x<x2) will be displayed.
Please enable Java for an interactive construction (with Cinderella).

Summary
If a continuous variable, X, follows the rectangular (or uniform) distribution with probability density function, f(x) then:
  • f(x) = 1/(b-a) for a £ x £ b, and f(x) = 0 otherwise
  • E(X) = (a+b)/2
  • Var(X) = (b-a)2/12
