S3 OCR Project
Outline backmore
The Mathematics Project does not have to be on Module S3. It is only included here for compatability with EdExcel's specification.

The Mathematics Project unit may be used only for certification in Advanced GCE Mathematics or Advanced GCE Further Mathematics. It will be worth 16 2/3 % of your marks.
You do not have to do coursework for any of the units P1 to P6, M1 to M4, S1 to S4, D1 or D2. However, the specifications include an optional Mathematics Project, in which you have the opportunity to carry out a project, do work of an investigative nature, etc.
You should submit for assessment a report of about 4000 words.
You must submit one single project. The project title must be agreed by your teacher before work starts. There are no restrictions on the type of project that is acceptable, other than that of being compatible with the Assessment Objectives and the Assessment Criteria.

A project should either attempt to include a variety of mathematical ideas or else attempt to pursue some narrower aspect of mathematics to a greater depth. The length of a project should normally be about 4000 words (excluding any supplementary tables of data, graphs, bibliography, program listings, detailed algebraic proofs, etc.).
It is not intended that the work submitted for assessment should necessarily represent all the work carried out by a candidate during the course. It is expected that, before embarking on the project for submission, candidates will have carried out other (probably smaller) exercises as and when opportunities arise.

Summary

  • the project is worth 16 2/3% of the marks
  • your report should be of about 4000 words
  • it can be on any aspect of your course - but check it with your teacher
