Mental test

Are people getting worse at the basic skill of mental arithmetic? How quickly can you work out 6x7 or 23-8? Download MathsNet Mental Tests 1.5 and try a draft version of a program designed to improve students' mental arithmetic skills.

Mental Tests is freeware. The zip file provided (28 October 2001) includes the full help file (Mental.hlp). You will have to move this file to the correct directory yourself after installation. Please let me know if it all works or not.

This program is also available to download from ZDNet Shareware Library in the USA, where you will find an independent review giving it a rating of 3 stars

Note that Mental Tests used to be shareware, but in the five years of its existence I have never received a single penny for it, so now I'm giving it away!

Technical bits
At present MathsNet Mental Tests is available in Windows version only and there are no current plans for other versions (due to absence of programming skills on my part). It is now at Version 1.5, including full help, and may one day be further developed to include numerous mental arithmetic games. I would like to write a Java version. Does anyone know how this can be done? Any feedback on MathsNet Mental Tests gratefully received.

Installation
Download mental.zip which will need "unzipping" using something like pkunzip.exe. Then run setup.exe. Most files will be copied into a directory of your choosing and a few will be copied to your Windows/System folder. Finally, click on the MENTAL icon. The program is designed to be completely self-explanatory... but is it? Any suggestions for improvements? What would make it worth actually buying for real money?

This program is written in Visual Basic. Although included in the zip file, the runtime file vbrun300.dll can also be downloaded from here.
