RECENT DEVELOPMENTS Since
the beginning of May MathsNet A
Level plus has been a fully fledged subscription site in
partnership with Chartwelle Yorke. It caters for the familiar Examination
boards AQA, OCR and Edexcel and also the Northern Ireland board CCEA, Welsh
board WJEC and Scottish Highers too. It also caters for the three International
Baccalaureate Diploma courses: HL, SL and Mathematical Studies.
Subscription to a full A level or equivalent will cost the individual
£20 a year. Schools and colleges can buy any number of individual
subscriptions or opt for a 50-user or unlimited licence. Full subscription
details are available from Chartwell
Yorke and subscriptions can be purchase either online at
www.cymaths.co.ukor
via traditional invoice methods.
The content of the site has expanded
hugely from the original version a year ago on MathsNet. There are now over
3200 pages. You can visit the entire site but individual pages will require
subscription before you can view them - apart from about 150 pages which a free
to view to give you a sample of what is available. Topics include algebra,
graphs, trigonometry, differentiation, calculus, vectors, numerical methods,
probability, statistics, mechanics, complex numbers, hyperbolic functions,
matrices, multivariable calculus, group theory. Try searching for something.
Any individual page is easily found by our page numbering system. Downloadable
material is being added. Files for use with Cabri, Autograph, Omnigraph,
Geometer's Sketchpad, Fathom, Excel and TI-nSpire are being developed; more
will follow. There is an extensive interactive glossary and graph library as
well as biographies of the mathematicians who have contributed to the
development of advanced mathematics. The examination papers are being updated.
For example the site already holds questions from the core papers sat in
January 2008 and will shortly contain questions from the Summer 2008 season
too. The inclusion of the International Baccalaureate means there is new
content on sets, equivalence classes, basic numerical methods and financial
mathematics. Content specific to graphic calculators is here too, based at
present on the TI-84 model.
There are plans to produce a course suitable
for undergraduates following science related studies who require some
mathematical knowledge. We are also looking at producing a "Pre-Calc" course
suitable for American schools. If an organisation is running a short course
(say a revision session) the site can provide the material relevent to that
course so that users logging on will have access only to that. Contact the site
for further details.
