An update on resource
development at www.mathsnet.net. Thank you for subscribing. MathsNet is a free
and independent educational website, produced in its entirety by me, and
supported technically by www.granada-learning.com.
The password for
access to the puzzle answers is not given here but is included in the emailed
newsletter.
MAIN RESOURCE SUMMARY As this is the first newsletter of
a new (UK ) academic year I will summarise the main curriculum resources on
MathsNet. They are:
ASA2 Mathematics:
www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ Geometry:
www.mathsnet.net/geometry/ Graphs: www.mathsnet.net/graphs/ Fractions:
www.mathsnet.net/fractions/
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS The
discussion forum at www.mathsnet.net/forum/ has been updated and restarted.
Please make a constribution to get some discussion going. The ASA2 material
also includes a discussion forum (at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/forum/)
aimed specifically at students and teachers of ASA2 maths. Please make a
contribution here, particularly in the light of recent exam results. Is the
crisis in A-Level mathematics showing any sign of abatting? The Mechanics
module M1 at www.mathnset.net/asa2/modules/m1.html has been developed with
applets illustrating some of the key concepts.
The numeracy resources
both at Number Cruncher (www.mathsnet.net/cruncher/) and The Framework
(www.mathsnet.net/nns/) have been updated to include applets made available on
the DFES Standards site. Highlights include Monty and NumberGrid.
I
have added a new search page, called Floogle Search, at
www.mathsnet.net/floogle/ that combines the Google search engine with Flash 6
(which you may need to download) to produce a useful search method within
MathsNet.
The online interactive dictionary of mathematical terms
continues to be developed at www.mathsnet.net/dictionary/.
The idea is simple: to make available on one page a whole range of definitions
of common terms, using diagrams wherever possible.
At
www.mathsnet.net/geometry/solid/
there are some 3D activities using applets kindly lent to me by the Freudenthal
Institute at www.fi.uu.nl. Finally, the Graphs material includes a new applet,
again from the Freudenthal Institute, that enables the user to construct flow
diagrams and graphs to illustrate algrebraic processes. Find it at
www.mathsnet.net/graphs/algebralines.html. It may remind you of the program
Numerator that Longman Logotron used to publish.
CURRENT PROJECTS The
Further Maths modules, P4, P5 and P6 are going to be developed and I will be
reviewing some "apps" fro the TI-83 Plus that TI are promoting on their
education website. On the geometry side, you can see the first part of some
pages that use CabriJava to illustrate aspects of Richard Feynman's "lost
lecture" on the motion of the planets around the sun:
www.mathsnet.net/cabri/feynman.html.
