Newsletter, Volume 6.1, January 2003

An update on resource development at www.mathsnet.net. Thank you for subscribing. MathsNet is a free and independent educational website, produced in its entirety by me, and supported technically by www.granada-learning.com.

The password for access to the puzzle answers is not given here but is included in the emailed newsletter.

MAIN RESOURCE SUMMARY
The main curriculum resources on MathsNet are:

ASA2 Mathematics: www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/
GCSE Mathematics: www.mathsnet.net/gcse/
Geometry: www.mathsnet.net/geometry/
Graphs: www.mathsnet.net/graphs/
Algebra: www.mathsnet.net/algebra/
Fractions: www.mathsnet.net/fractions/

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
The GCSE material at www.mathsnet.net/gcse/ is targeted at Intermediate level and consists of over 200 individual exam questions, all based on exam papers published by the UK examination boards. Each question is interactive and includes a full step by step answer. There are exam papers and printable versions too. The questions are mainly on number and algebra, with some on shape and space. I have just started the data handling section. I will probably add more when the January 2003 papers are published.

The ASA2 course at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ includes exam questions based on the November 2002 papers. I plan to include the January 2003 papers as soon as I can find the time.

A section on co-ordinate symmetries has been added to the Graphs resource at www.mathsnet.net/graphs/.

CURRENT PROJECTS
Interactive Pythagoras's Theorem at www.mathsnet.net/dynamic/pythagoras/ is a collection of ideas based on the famous theorem, including a set of visual proofs, interactive school-type problems, related problems (Pythagoras's table, Pythagorean triples for example) and historical background.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
The website itself has moved, though you will probably not notice. Granada Learning did support the site but I have moved to my own web servers now (at www.positive-internet.com by the way) and I own the domain name mathsnet.net. There were a few technical glitches during this short period. The newsletter and feedback forms did not work for a day or two. But now I am in total control of the site. My school, The Hewett School in Norwich, do plan to support me to a degree and when that happens there will be an appropriate "Sponsored by..." acknowledgement on the home page. I am still hoping to develop a companion www.mathsnet.com site.

All the main pages on MathsNet have an alphabetical index at top right corner which givers direct access to most areas of the site.

Since January the ASA2 material at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ has been expanded to include module exam papers sat in November and January. The GCSE material at www.mathsnet.net/gcse/ has been expanded in a similar way.

CURRENT PROJECTS
A growing collection of online dynamic demonstrations of maths software is maintained at www.mathsnet.net/viewlets/. The software demonstrated includes Autograph, Cabri Geometry, Geometers Sketchpad, Cinderella, FX Draw, Omnigraph and Excel. The demonstrations use Flash and and have been created using the Viewletbuilder applet available from www.qarbon.com. This work is in part sponsored by www.chartewellyorke.com .

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
This is a brief update, just to say the GCSE materials have been extended at www.mathsnet.net/gcse/, but most importantly that I have added a new far more sophisticated discussion forum at www.mathsnet.net/forums/ which needs some content! Please get make a contribution there or make some suggestions for what I could get started.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Another brief update to summarise developments on the discussion forum at www.mathsnet.net/forums/. There are now sections on A Level, GCSE, general mathematics, interactive geometry and Software Help and Advice. This is the section that I would like to invite MathsNet readers to contribute to. The software mentioned includes Autograph, Cabri, C.a.R., Cinderella, Crocodile Maths, Derive, Excel, Fathom, FX Draw, Geometers Sketchpad, LiveMaths, MathsAlive, MathType, Omnigraph, WebEQ. Contributors are welcome to suggest others. I have invited the creaters and/or producers of the above software to look in on the forum so they can respond to queries.
