RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Although the new specifications for A Level Mathematics from September 2004 are still not ratified, I have put up a draft of a new site on AS/A2 maths at http://www.mathsnet.net/asa2/2004/. This new site is being actively developed whereas the site for current A-Level students at http://www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ remains unchanged. New interactive material includes some pages on proof. See basic deductive proofs at
http://www.mathsnet.net/asa2/2004/c11proof.html and proof by induction at
http://www.mathsnet.net/asa2/2004/fp36series_2.html.
Module FP3 also includes new pages on Reduction formulae. The whole ASA2 site numbers over 1000 interactive pages. Comments would be most welcome.

There is a new section in the Algebra material at http://www.mathsnet.net/algebra/ on logical ordering. Here you can put a sequence of algebra steps in simplifying or solving equations into correct order. An interactive gauge tells you whether or not you are moving in the right direction. In fact the gauge is measuring Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between your order and the correct order. Look for Ordering in the Activities menu. These pages have been produced specifically for MathsNet by Advisory Matters ( http://www.advisorymatters.co.uk ).

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Exam boards are in the process of revealing proposals for A Level Mathematics from September 2004. As a pre-emptive strike I have put up a draft of a new site on AS/A2 maths at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/2004/. So far there are completed sections on C1, C2, S1 and M1. Comments would be most welcome.

Both this new resource and the original one at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ include a developing section on Decision maths where you will find a collection of Flash movies illustrating many of the algorithms in D1. They have all been written by Helen Foster, Alton College, UK, and used with her permission.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Though the GCSE site is now a subscription site, I have for a short period put a freely available collection of Excel worksheets at www.mathsnet.net/gcse/worksheets.html. These cover about half the Intermediate GCSE course.

Wisweb (http://www.wisweb.nl/) in the Netherlands is an excellent source of interactive mathematics. The website's principle programmer, Peter Boon, has allowed me to include some of his material on MathsNet. Go to www.mathsnet.net/algebra/ and click on "Activities" in the menu. Try "Balancing" or "What x?" Go to www.mathsnet.net/graphs/ and under "Activities" look for "Find the Function". At the "Geometry in 3 Dimensions" section at www.mathsnet.net/geometry/solid/ look at "Nets" and "Build by night or day".

Math online (http://www.univie.ac.at/future.media/moe/) is another source of good material and Franz Embacher, one of its creators, has allowed me to include some activities on MathsNet. At www.mathsnet.net/algebra/ look for "Structures", and at www.mathsnet.net/graphs/ look for "Recognising".

The ASA2 resource at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ a new section on Decision maths. You will find a growing collection of Flash movies illustrating many of the basic algorithms. They have all been written by Helen Foster, Alton College, UK, and used with her permission.

Edexcel have just released the draft version of their AS/A2 specification for September 2004. It includes details of the newly created pure maths modules C1 to C4 and FP1 to FP3. The MathsNet ASA2 site will be updated to correspond to this by Summer 2004.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
The MathsNet ChessClub at www.mathsnet.net/puzzles/chess is based around an online chess game whereby you can play the computer. The computer is not easy to beat! Also included is a growing number of chess puzzles built on mate in a fixed number of moves or on endgames where only a minimal number of pieces remain. The checkmate in 16 moves puzzle is as yet unsolved.
The Interactive GCSE course is due for launch next Monday as a subscription service. For those of you, students or teachers, who have been using this MathsNet resource for summer 2003's exams, and particularly those who have sent in feedback and helpful suggestions, I hope you will not be too disappointed to find this out. Go to www.mathsnetgcse.com to see the site. A few topics are freely available there but for the rest you will need to subscribe. I hope current users can convince their schools and colleges to part with the cash!

The ASA2 resource at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ includes questions from this summer's module exams. The Edexcel P3 module in particular was thought to be difficult and the board have responded to comments from teachers (who thought questions 5, 7 and 8 were debatable) with a detailed report, which concluded by saying the examiners credited understanding in question 7 and used follow-through to reward students in question 8. There may be further reactions from the Awarding Committee.

www.mathsnet.com is also live.
