RECENT DEVELOPMENTS Though
the GCSE site is now a subscription site, I have for a short period put a
freely available collection of Excel worksheets at
www.mathsnet.net/gcse/worksheets.html. These cover about half the Intermediate
GCSE course.
Wisweb (http://www.wisweb.nl/) in the Netherlands is an
excellent source of interactive mathematics. The website's principle
programmer, Peter Boon, has allowed me to include some of his material on
MathsNet. Go to www.mathsnet.net/algebra/ and click on "Activities" in the
menu. Try "Balancing" or "What x?" Go to www.mathsnet.net/graphs/ and under
"Activities" look for "Find the Function". At the "Geometry in 3 Dimensions"
section at www.mathsnet.net/geometry/solid/ look at "Nets" and "Build by night
or day".
Math online (http://www.univie.ac.at/future.media/moe/) is
another source of good material and Franz Embacher, one of its creators, has
allowed me to include some activities on MathsNet. At www.mathsnet.net/algebra/
look for "Structures", and at www.mathsnet.net/graphs/ look for "Recognising".
The ASA2 resource at www.mathsnet.net/asa2/modules/ a new section on
Decision maths. You will find a growing collection of Flash movies illustrating
many of the basic algorithms. They have all been written by Helen Foster, Alton
College, UK, and used with her permission.
Edexcel have just released
the draft version of their AS/A2 specification for September 2004. It includes
details of the newly created pure maths modules C1 to C4 and FP1 to FP3. The
MathsNet ASA2 site will be updated to correspond to this by Summer 2004.
