RECENT DEVELOPMENTS This is
the first newsletter since January, and, as before, the reason for this
infrequency is lack of time. HMI have visited my school again in the last few
days and pronounced "reasonable progress". They'll be back in the autumn for
more. The subscription site at http://www.mathsnetgcse.com continues to be
developed (now including exam questions from this summer's session), and the
ASA2 site at http://www.mathsnet.net/asa2/2004/ has been updated too. You
may notice Google ads appearing on pages now. See "Future Expansion" for the
reason why. Ever thought of turning away from Internet Explorer to Firefox?
You can download Firefox for free from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
. It is highly recommended.
FUTURE EXPANSION
My ISP
contacted me about two weeks ago to say that the site is so popular that they
can no longer tolerate on my current deal the bandwidth it is using. I have to
move to a "dedicated server". It's good to be popular but this move will
require a large amount of money. Therefore, if it is to continue in its present
form, MathsNet has to seek significant sponsorship. The Google ads are a small
experimental step in that direction. Could you be a sponsor or do you know
any individual or business that might be interested? Detailed log stats for the
site are available to convince anyone that there IS a large volume of traffic
passing through. Note also: Some search engine ratings, June 2005. A
search for "maths" puts MathsNet 2nd out of 6,170,000 at www.google.com, and
11th out of 3,042,000 at www.lycos.co.uk, . A search for "interactive geometry"
puts MathsNet 4th out of 1,600,000 at www.google.com. A search for "geometric
construction" puts MathsNet 3rd out of 1,980,000 at www.google.com and 2nd out
of 29,300 at www.yahoo.com. A search for "A Level Mathematics" puts MathsNet
1st out of 1,710,000 at www.google.com
Finally, to repeat from the last
few newsletters, any comments are welcome on Equation Buster at
