MEP: Secondary Demonstration Project
Diary 1997-1999

The characters involved

In order to be as frank as possible about incidents and progress in this project, all names have been changed.
The school, which we shall call The Grange School, is a comprehensive 13-18 mixed state school. Up until this project we had used the SMP scheme and Graduated Assessment examination system for all Year 10 and Year 11 students. Mathematics is taught in the Maths Block, a single storey building housing 10 classrooms. Doors are often open and many of us wander into each other's lessons at all times of the day - usually to swipe some new exercise books or find file paper.

The Maths block

The plan for September 1997 is to try the MEP Demonstration Project with three classes:

  • Class A, teacher Alan Ladd, aiming at Higher Level Entry. Key pupils include Scott Antarctic (bright but truculent)
  • Class B, teacher James Stewart, aiming at Intermediate Level Entry. 14 boys, 11 girls, Key pupils include Jasmine.
  • Class C, teacher John Wayne, aiming at Foundation Level Entry
The GCSE Statistics exam, recommended by MEP will be taken by Class D, teacher Mr William Holden and Class E, teacher Mrs Jean Autry. Unless stated otherwise, this diary is written by James Stewart, who is also head of the Mathematics Department.
