MathsNet Downloads

Mental tests is a Windows program whereby you can practise many aspects of mental arithmetic, including basic number bonds, estimation, "fizz-buzz". Eight different mental arithmetic activities are available and they are all timed so that you can practise and increase your speed.

All the other items listed above are files that can be loaded into the named program, or calculator, in order to investigate mathematics.

MathsNet Downloads

Excel

Not, unfortunately, the program itself, but some files that can be read by it. They are in Excel 3 format. Download excel.zip then use pkunzip.exe (or similar) to unzip the and you will find two Excel files.
excelium.xls is a number puzzle with 9 parts to it. happy.xls is a sequence puzzle based on happy numbers.

Omnigraph

Files from MathsNet that can be read by the graph processing program Omnigraph. A demo of Omnigraph itself is available from SPA.

Download omnigrap.zip, then use pkunzip.exe (or similar) to unzip the file and you will find three Omnigraph files.
robert.ogr gives the weights in kilograms over the first 40 weeks in the life of Robert Dye, born 14 July 1989.
genelect.ogr gives the percentage of votes cast and percentage of seats gained in the British House of Commons in General Elections from 1918 to 1970.
primary.ogr gives the heights, weights and ages of a class of 5 to 6 year old pupils in a Norwich primary school.

FX Draw

FX Draw 2 is a Windows based drawing package designed for mathematics teachers. See MathsNet's review of version 2. It provides you with a tool that can draw almost any required mathematical diagram with a minimum amount of input from yourself. FX Draw gives you specialised tools for drawing angles, graphs, normal distribution curves, Venn diagrams, right-angled triangles and a host more. It comes supplied with a gallery of over three hundred ready drawn diagrams. It can fit seamlessly into any Windows word processor. Download a demo from efofex.

Fx Draw 2 includes sets of pre-drawn diagrams called "galleries", of which more are available on the efofex site. MathsNet is also developing some galleries for the program. Currently available for free download are:

Download the file and save it into the GALLERIES folder within your FX Draw 2 folder.

Sharp EL 9600

Here are some slideshow files that can be loaded into the SHARP EL 9600 graphic calculator. Download el9600.zip then use pkunzip.exe (or similar) to unzip the and you will find some MathsNet files. Use the PC Link software to load each one into your calculator. See the EL 9600 page for more about these files.

TI-82, TI-83 calculators

Here are some files that can be loaded into the graphic calculators TI-82 or TI-83. Download t1823.zip then use pkunzip.exe (or similar) to unzip the and you will find some MathsNet files. Use the TI-LINK software to load a file into your calculator. The basic idea is to find the curve that passes through the points displayed.
coords.82g
Contains two sets of problems accessed through the PRGM button.
COORDSA: 20 sets of points. Find the straight line that passes through them.
COORDSB: 10 sets of points, which lie on quadratic, cubic, or reciprocal curves.
curves.82g
Contains four sets of problems accessed through the PRGM button.
LINEAR: 10 sets of points. Find the straight line that passes through them.
QUAD: 12 sets of points, all of which lie on quadratic curves.
CUBIC: 8 sets of points, all of which lie on cubic curves.
RATPOL: 10 sets of points, all of which lie on rational quadratic curves.

To connect your calculator to your PC or Mac a cable and software is needed. The software, including a version specifically for the TI-83, is available to download from Texas Instruments at their TI-Graph Link page.

Also available to download from MathsNet are some TI-82 files created by David Payne. They are:
Angles
You have 5 angles to find using your estimating skill and by trial and improvement with a choice of 3 levels of difficulty. Your estimates are analysed in detail; can you get straight grade A’s? ,
DiceSum
Define your own dice simulation. You choose the number of trials, the number of dice and the number of sides on each dice; the calculator displays the results as a graph.
Findrule
Work out the linear rule connecting the two sets of numbers. 3 levels of difficulty.
Logo
This is a simple Logo program, allowing you to go Forward, Back, Left, Right, to Clearscreen and to Save pictures. You can also use Repeat and Penup/Pendown and create a procedure.
Lottery
Generates one set of 6 lottery numbers per week (ignoring bonus ball) for up to 52 weeks. Discover how many times the six numbers you choose would have had 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or even 5 or 6 matches over your chosen number of weeks.
Tables
Choose which times table you want to learn or practise; answer questions about the times table of your choice, which need not be restricted to integers.You will receive instant feedback on your answers and your overall mark as a percentage.
TellTime
Practise telling the time on an on-screen clock; 12 hour and 24 hour modes. 5 levels of difficulty.
Trnsform
Transformations. Design your shape using co-ordinates for vertices, then reflect, rotate, enlarge, translate, save and print.
DISPLAY and RESET are 2 utility programs which allow you respectively to view any designs you have created using logo or trnsform and to reset TI 82 variables to default values; the second is very useful when someone else has been using the class set of calculators.
Download all the above files from here. Once downloaded, unzip the files and use your TI-Graph link.

Winlogo

Unfortunately, WinLogo is not available to download. However some logo files that will run with WinLogo are available.
3d.log is a collection of procedures suitable for the Windows version of Winlogo that allow certain three dimensional shapes to be drawn and then rotated about the x, y and z axes.
For example, after loading the files and "interpreting" them, type in the following:

	tetrahedron 40
	rotate

Now press any of x, y or z and the shape will rotate accordingly. Press e to end the rotating. Now try

	octahedron 50
	rotate

There are many other procedures included in the file. You will have to experiment with the values of the variables in order for them to be drawn correctly.

Download 3d.zip Once downloaded, do not unzip just rename the file 3d.log and then load into Winlogo in the usual way.

Also available to download from MathsNet are some Winlogo files created by Phil Rhodes. They are:
Turbo2000
Aim - to improve understanding of turtle commands, bearings and vectors. This is a racing game for 2 or 1 against the computer. There are three tracks and 3 modes of play - Normal (using FD and BK, LT and RT), Bearings (using the SETHEADING command), and Vectors (here the player enters 2 values for the vector). This has been pretty well bug tested so that they cannot cheat and for crashing against the side (though this may need testing). A path is drawn so that the teacher can see how well/badly they are doing.
Treasure Island
Aim - to improve understanding of negative coordinates and negative numbers. This is a find the treasure game with 3 different islands, getting progressively more difficult. Players enter coordinates of coloured circles representing clues, obtaining 8 codes. These they then turn into the coordinates of the final treasure which allows them to enter the next level/island. Initially coordinates and clues are positive numbers progressing to negative numbers. All clues, coloured circles and final treasure location and randomly generated for each game so each game is totally different.
This Logo game consists of 3 progressively harder levels. Each level contists of random coloured circles containing random clues. The player has to type in the coordinates of each bit of "treasure" to obtain each clue. This then enables the player to finish each level. Points are awarded for finding "treasure" and completing a level, but subtracted for choosing incorrect coordinates. Landing in the sea causes them to restart that level, as they have just "drowned". You will need a pen and paper to write down the codes.
Hangman
Aim - to improve spelling of mathematical words. The classic game of hangman but of mathematical words. This was converted from a game found on the internet but for a different version of logo. Some small bugs may remain.
Golden House
This is a text adventure game with a few pictures, quizzes, a maze and some keys to find the jackpot.
Download all the above files from here. Once downloaded, unzip the files and load into Winlogo in the usual way.

Report writing

Two files in Microsoft Word 2000 format can be downloaded directly from this site to support report writing for teachers. The files complement materials offered to schools as part of NOF training, for example GLPD.
yr10report.doc is the file containing a typical pupil report form, yr10data.doc contains the data to be inserted into that form. Using the mail merge options within Word, these two files can be merged and printed to produce a class set of reports. The files are intended as simple exemplars and canm easily be extended or edited to cater for other forms of school reporting.

This is a Windows program all to do with mental arithmetic. Available from Abacus.

Advanced Grapher 1.51

Advanced Grapher is a powerful 2D graph plotting program. Having a multi-document interface, the program allows plotting of graphs of several types, including implicit functions, inequalities, tables, etc. The program can determine derivatives, tangents, normals and regression analysis, etc.
The program is distributed as shareware. Unregistered version expires after 30 days of its installation. Available from Michael Serpik.

Aepryus

A program to explore graphical representations of both 2D (Cartesian or polar coordinates) and 3D (Cartesian, cylindrical, or spherical coordinates) plotting. Download from Aepryus.

Autograph

The Dynamic coordinate geometry program originally written for the Acorn Archimedes. Now in full enhanced PC form. Get a demo from Chartwell-Yorke. More information at: Autograph.

Cabri Geometry II

A demo version of this geometry package for Windows, Dos or Mac is available on CD ROM from Chartwell-Yorke and soon downloadable from that site also.

Cinderella

Software for doing interactive geometry on a computer is available for demo-download here . Buy the software at shareit.com.

DISCUS

Discovering Important Statistical Concepts Using Spreadsheets, or DISCUS, is a set of interactive spreadsheets, produced by Coventry University, written in Microsoft Excel, designed for teaching basic statistics concepts at sixth form and first year undergraduate level. The materials are designed to be used off the shelf by students working on their own, and little preparation by teaching staff is required. Freely downloadable from DISCUS.

Dr Geo

Dr Geo is a free interactive geometry package which runs in Dos but works fine starting from Windows. Written by Hilaire Fernandes, Taiwan, it is freeware and certainly comparable to any of Cabri, Geometry Inventor or Geometers Sketchpad. The next big release of Dr Geo (with an embedded procedural-recursive interpreted language) will be released under the GPL licence (look at www.gnu.org to know more about it, this is the licence used by Linux). It means Dr Geo will still be free software and will be release with source files under the GPL licence.

ESP PDF

Euklid

EUKLID is a geometry drawing program that produces dynamic drawings that can be saved or exported. Use the toolbar and menu items to select a geometrical object or angle you want to draw, and, if applicable, enter the data specifications for that object. Multiple objects can be dragged around the screen, a limited number of colors can be introduced into the drawing, and measurements can be made. Four tabbed sections with toolbars make accessing menu items and steps easier. EUKLID has a number of tools for editing drawings and includes both replay and macro capabilities. Euklides

New interactive geometry software from Hungary - available in English. Euklides 2.02 is free. A WEBuklides java project is coming. Download Euklides from Euklides.

The company that produces Formula One - Visual Components - have recently been taken over by TideStone Technologies, who say:

Fractint

Fractint is a freeware fractal generator created for IBM PC's and compatible computers. It is the most versatile and extensive fractal program available for any price. The authors work very hard to keep it that way. It has many great features and it is constantly being upgraded and improved by the Stone Soup team. Download from Spanky

Geometria

Geometria is a standalone Java application, which means you can run it just as well on a PC (Windows, Linux) as on a Sun machine. However, you will have to have Java Runtime Environment 1.8 or later installed. With Geometria you can either compose or solve problems. A number of predefinite shapes are available (prisms, pyramids, Platonic solids) to cut, join, transform, or you can build a new shape from scratch using a smart xyGrid. Once composed, a problem can be saved for further editing or resolving. Down load from here.

Graph FAWM

Graph FAWM is for teachers and students of mathematics. It will draw graphs of equations, show asymptotes, locate intersection points, turning points, etc. Has an uncluttered interface. Available from New Fawm

Internet assistance for Excel

Available free from Microsoft is a "plug-in" to Excel which allows you to convert an Excel file into a HTML page ready to put on the Internet.

LiveMath

LiveMath has now been bought by WebPrimitives, LLC and has been renamed LiveMath Maker. More information about this may be found at the website http://www.livemath.com/. This plugin allows you to view and manipulate mathematical concents in your browser. A demo copy can be obtained from Chartwell-Yorke.

Manipula Math with Java

Nine java applets ranging from a proof of Pythagoras to illustrations of the sine function and the sum of the exterior angles of a polygon. Available from Manipula.

Mathematical Assistant

This is a Dos program (Windows version expected in 1997), allowing many aspects of mathematics to be investigated, such as graphs, algebra, primes, geometry and so on. Available from MatheAss.

MathCad Explorer

Mathcad Explorer is a free read-only version of Mathcad for browsing live mathematical documents on your computer, your network, or the Web. Mathcad Explorer lets you read and interact with Mathcad-based worksheets and electronic books, with the same level of mathematics functionality as the best-selling Mathcad 7 Professional edition. MathPlayer

MathML is a new way of encoding mathematics using XML. Many software packages including browsers, editors, computer algebra programs and publishing software are starting to use MathML to communicate. Unlike most other ways of encoding equations, MathML provides ways to directly encode various interactivity properties of an equation, which makes it an ideal choice for dynamic math on the web.
When someone visits a Web page that contains math, Internet Explorer "sees" a document written in HTML containing MathML "islands" for each equation. Some information in the header of the document tells Internet Explorer that MathPlayer software is to be used to display and print the MathML islands. Internet Explorer loads and executes the MathPlayer software on an as-needed basis. Whenever Internet Explorer sees MathML, it gives it to MathPlayer to display on the screen (or print it). MicroWorlds 2 and Web Player Plugin

The MicroWorlds Web Player allows you to view dynamic interactive Logo content in the form of MicroWorlds 2.0 projects with the Internet browsers Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or Netscape Navigator 3.0, and above. MSW Logo

MSW Logo, or Berkeley Logo, is a version of logo for Microsoft Windows. This site includes written materials on logo and other related software to download.

LogoTile, the well known microworld, is now available for download in a version for MSWLogo, available from the newsletter page at ATM

MuPad

A computer algebra system similar to Maple and Mathematica. Download for most platforms from Sciface.

NCSS

NCSS, or Number Cruncher Statistical Software, for the occasional statistics user is available for Windows 95/98/NT. Download from NCSS.

Omnigraph Version 3

Omnigraph Version 3 for Windows 95. See MathsNet's Omnigraph page for info. Download from SPA.

OOG

The Object Orientation Game. A demo of a puzzle on manipulating tangrams, pentominoes, hexagons and polyominoes. Download from MCM.

Peanut Software

A collection of free maths software, including: Wingeom (2D and 3D constructions), Winplot (2D and 3D plotting), Winstats (scatter plots, histograms etc). Download from Philips Exeter Academy, USA.

Poly

With Poly, you can manipulate polyhedral solids on the computer in a variety of ways. Flattened versions (nets) of polyhedra may be printed and then cut out, folded, and taped, to produce three-dimensional models. Download from Pedogoguery.

Polyhedron

Simulates a number of tools, such as the ruler, protractor, setsquare, compass, bisector, saw, and rubber (eraser). You can manage them through a common menu. Solids can be revolved, visualized in different manners, cut, stack again and so forth. It is a DOS application that runs without problems on PCs under DOS. Download from here.

SimCalc

The SimCalc Project - Simulations for Calculus Learning - aims to democratize access to the Mathematics of Change for mainstream students by combining advanced simulation technology with innovative curriculum that begins in the early grades and includes powerful ideas extending beyond classical calculus.

Survey

Survey allows children to enter the results of their own surveys exactly as they would on paper. They can use tally charts - or enter frequencies directly if they prefer. Then they can graph their data in a host of different ways. Download from SPA.

SupaStat

Data analysis for schools and colleges. SupaStat has, with its constant improvement over the years, proved to be one of the foremost data analysis programs available. And now SupaStat for Windows offers even more power, and at the same time has been made more flexible and easy-to-use. Download from SPA.

SuperLogo for Windows

Another (!) new version of logo. A demo program is available from Longman Logotron.

SuperLogo Games

Downloadable games to run in Superlogo (including the demo version) from LogoGame.

Tess

With Tess, you can quickly create attractive symmetric planar illustrations. While you draw, Tess will automatically maintain the symmetry group you have chosen; 11 rosette, all 7 frieze, and all 17 wallpaper groups are included. Illustrations may be saved using Tess’ own cross-platform format or printed out using your own inkjet or laser printer. Download from Pedagoguery website.

TesselMania

TesselMania is a demo of a program for creating Escher-style tesselations. Download from The World of Escher website.

Texas Instruments

At their home site, Texas Instruments calculators offer downloadable files. To connect your calculator to your PC or Mac a cable and software is needed. The software, including a version specifically for the TI-83, is available to download from Texas Instruments at their TI-Graph Link page. 3D Geometrical objects

This is a Windows shareware program that allows you to look at 3D prisms, pyramids and other objects, and their nets. You choose from a range of objects and watch the net fold into the shape. Available from eduIQ.

3D Grapher

3D Grapher will help you create animated 2D and 3D equation and table-based graphs. An unlimited number of graphs can be plotted using different colors and lighting conditions. 30 day trial version available from romanlab.

UCALC

UCALC is a multipurpose calculator program which includes an expression evaluator, equation solver, integrations, 2D/3D equation plotting, unit conversions, user solution modules and more. Download from UCALC.COM.
